NYPD aims to curb domestic violence, bolster detective ranks, with new unit
""This new unit will handle the entire domestic violence process," Adams said. "That means more resources to our victims and more cops to bring abusers to justice.""
"Adams, who recalled growing up in an abusive household, said that there had been a 29% increase in domestic violence complaints in the past year, notably from within marginalized communities and particularly victimizing Black women."
"Tisch said putting the precinct investigators under the command of the detective bureau sets them on an 18-month career path to becoming regular detectives."
""In short this new unit now gives [domestic violence] cases the same focused attention as gun violence or hate crimes," the police commissioner said."
The NYPD is consolidating precinct domestic violence officers into a dedicated detective bureau unit to improve investigation efficiency, victim comfort, and case outcomes. The new unit will manage the entire domestic violence process and bring additional resources to victims while increasing officer focus on abusers. Approximately 450 precinct officers will move under detective bureau command, with an 18-month career path toward regular detective promotion. Domestic violence complaints rose 29% in the past year and have increased 41% since 2020, with domestic violence assaults comprising over 40% of felony assaults and disproportionately affecting marginalized communities and Black women.
