Zohran Mamdani, a New York State Assembly member from Astoria, won the New York City mayoral election, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent after losing the Democratic primary, and Republican Curtis Sliwa. The Associated Press called the race about an hour after polls closed. Mamdani addressed supporters at Brooklyn Paramount in downtown Brooklyn and framed his victory as power reclaimed by working people. He described bruised, calloused, scarred hands and declared that a political dynasty had been toppled. He said he wished Cuomo the best in private life, vowed to move on, and said he will be sworn in on January 1, calling the result a mandate for change, affordability, and a government that delivers.
