"A mobile speed sign installed by NYPD in Central Park in hopes of educating cyclists if they are exceeding a 15-mile-per-hour speed limit that goes into effect next week is delivering readings are as accurate as a rectal thermometer in a penguin. The bonkers electronic board, which was located near the entrance at 61st and Broadway, gave these readings on Thursday as Streetsblog watched:"
"The Police Department, which confirmed the signs were placed in multiple areas around town "for educational purposes" on the eve of the new speed limit, said, for lack of a better cliché, "Nothin' to see here." "The sign is not malfunctioning," said an agency spokesperson, who declined to provide a name. "The sign will read the highest speed in the area regardless of volume or traffic.""
A speed sign placed by NYPD in Central Park aims to educate cyclists about a new 15-mile-per-hour bike speed limit starting Oct. 24. The sign, located near 61st and Broadway, displayed implausible speeds for a variety of park users, including joggers, parked pedicabs, slow pedestrians, horse-drawn carriages, non-electric tourist bikes, a racing cyclist, and an e-bike deliverista. Examples included joggers at 14 mph, parked pedicabs at 9 mph, tourists on bikes at 25 mph, a speedster at 8 mph, and an e-bike deliverista at 0 mph. NYPD characterized the signs as educational and said the device reports the highest detected speed in the area rather than malfunctioning.
