New York City will establish a Department of Sustainable Delivery (DSD) to combat reckless e-bike and scooter use. This includes hiring 45 peace officers responsible for enforcing commercial cycling laws. The DSD aims to protect delivery workers, ensure pedestrian safety, and hold delivery app companies accountable. The mayor has urged the NYC Council to pass supportive legislation. However, the new officers will not begin their enforcement duties until 2028, leaving current safety issues unresolved as the new department develops its strategy.
The City Council passed a suite of bills aimed at making e-bikes safer, including one banning the sale of reconstituted batteries.
Under the approved $116 billion city budget, the mayor said 45 new peace officers will be hired to join the DSD.
The newly created Department of Sustainable Delivery is yet another step that we're taking to support delivery workers, keep pedestrians safe, and hold delivery app companies accountable.
Adams has been repeatedly calling on the NYC Council to pass legislation to hold delivery companies accountable.
