""We issue these summonses because every New Yorker deserves to be able to walk our sidewalks safely," Gragnani wrote in an emailed statement."
""Clearing snow and ice from sidewalks is one of the responsibilities of anyone who owns property in New York City.""
New York City issued about 3,577 sidewalk snow-shoveling summonses citywide following the weekend storm, including 325 on Staten Island. Staten Island's summons count nearly tripled the 150 issued after a Dec. 14 snowstorm. Property and business owners are required to clear snow and ice from sidewalks and other pedestrian walkways to create a 4-foot-wide path. Initial fines range from $100 to $150, with repeat fines between $150 and $350. The five boroughs received about 4 inches of snow in the storm, with one Staten Island measurement of 4.6 inches, below forecasts of 7 to 9 inches and under earlier December totals.
