Staten Island could get 6 new schools over the next 5 years: Here's what we know so far
"STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - As 2025 comes to a close, more school seats are on the way on Staten Island in coming years. New York City is working to tackle overcrowding and reduce class sizes amid a growing student population, and to meet class size requirements under state law. This means new schools are being constructed throughout the borough, while other seats may be acquired by leasing or buying and renovating space."
"A new annex building will add more seats to PS 13 in Rosebank. As of this summer, the New York City School Construction Authority completed demolition of the former St. Mary's School, located at 1 Virginia Ave., to create the annex. The new building, which will offer 283 seats for early childhood education, is slated to open in September 2027. It is expected to serve students in pre-K through second grade."
"Thousands of school seats are on the way as the city builds a brand-new educational complex at the former St. John Villa school campus in Arrochar. On behalf of the city Department of Education, the New York City School Construction Authority is creating three new school facilities, an athletic field with an approximately 700-seat bleacher section, a maintenance building, and an internal driveway network with two parking lots at 57 Cleveland Place."
New York City is expanding school capacity on Staten Island to address overcrowding, decrease class sizes, and comply with state class-size requirements. New construction, acquisitions, leases, renovations, and building additions will create seats across the borough. PS 13 in Rosebank will receive a three-story annex offering 283 early childhood seats, serving pre-K through second grade, and opening in September 2027. The former St. John Villa campus in Arrochar will become an education complex with three new schools, a roughly 700-seat bleacher athletic field, maintenance and parking facilities, and an internal driveway network at 57 Cleveland Place.
