Giancarlo Stanton hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the 10th and Austin Wells added his second homer as the Yankees beat the Rays 6-4. New York totaled five homers in the game and 14 in the two-game sweep, tying a major league record. Trent Grisham hit a leadoff homer and added a second-inning long ball; Wells and others combined for multiple multi-homer performances across consecutive games, a first in franchise history. All 19 runs over the two games came via homers. Rookie Cam Schlittler allowed one hit over 6 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out eight. The Yankees improved to 69-57, 4.5 games behind Toronto and 1.5 games ahead of Boston.
New York finished with five home runs on the night and 14 in the series sweep, tying a major league record for most homers in a two-game series. The 1999 Reds previously held the record all by themselves, doing so Sept. 4-5 against the Philadelphia Phillies -- with current Yankees manager Aaron Boone hitting one of the home runs for Cincinnati.
Wednesday's power surge came after a strong outing from rookie Cam Schlittler. Making his seventh major league start, Schlittler held the Rays scoreless and to one hit over a career-high 6 2/3 innings. His bid for a perfect game ended when Chandler Simpson singled to lead off the seventh. Schlittler walked two after the hit but escaped with help from reliever Luke Weaver. Schlittler struck out eight, all swinging.
