Zohran doubles down on plan for 'richer and whiter' NYC neighborhoods, says billionaires shouldn't exist
Briefly

New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani emphasized his controversial tax proposal aimed at wealthier, predominantly white neighborhoods while disputing claims of racism. His initiative, titled "Stop the Squeeze on NYC Homeowners," seeks to redistribute the tax burden from under-taxed outer borough homeowners to wealthier neighborhoods, which he argues pay less than their fair share. Mamdani maintains that his language reflects an assessment of the neighborhoods rather than a racial commentary, insisting the core of his agenda is fairness. Additionally, he voiced his stance against the existence of billionaires, aligning with his socialist beliefs.
"That is just a description of what we see right now," Mamdani told NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday. "It's not driven by race. It's more of an assessment of what neighborhoods are being under taxed and overtaxed."
"The use of that language is just an assessment of the neighborhood," Mamdani said. "I'm just naming things as they are."
Mamdani's policy proposal, "Stop the Squeeze on NYC Homeowners," outlines his plans to "shift the tax burden from overtaxed homeowners in the outer boroughs to more expensive homes in richer and whiter neighborhoods."
Mamdani also reiterated his belief that "we shouldn't have billionaires," despite campaigning in the city believed to have the most billionaires in the world at 12.
