Giants add Greg Newsome II to address need at cornerback
"The Giants, who were active Monday on the opening day of the free agent negotiating period, faced questions at cornerback after Cor'Dale Flott, who spent his first four NFL seasons in New York, opted to join the Tennessee Titans. With several other free agent cornerbacks also joining other teams Monday, the Giants turned to Newsome, a former first-round draft selection who was traded by the Cleveland Browns to the Jacksonville Jaguars last October."
"Newsome had one interception, six pass breakups and 29 tackles in 12 games -- 11 starts -- with the Jaguars. He had 52 tackles and nine pass breakups total in 2025, and his 99.1 passer rating in coverage was the 26th-worst mark among cornerbacks with at least 200 coverage snaps, according to NextGen Stats."
"Cleveland selected Newsome with the 26th overall pick in the 2021 draft and picked up his fifth-year option, giving him a 2025 salary of $13.38 million. Newsome was an outside cornerback as a rookie but moved inside to nickel after the Browns drafted Martin Emerson Jr. in 2022."
The New York Giants signed cornerback Greg Newsome II to a one-year contract worth up to $10 million on Tuesday. This move addressed the team's cornerback needs following Cor'Dale Flott's departure to the Tennessee Titans after four seasons with New York. Newsome, a former first-round pick by Cleveland in 2021, was traded to Jacksonville last October. With the Jaguars in 2025, he recorded one interception, six pass breakups, and 29 tackles in 12 games. Over his five-year career, Newsome has accumulated four interceptions, 43 pass breakups, and 207 tackles. The Giants pursued him after other free agent cornerbacks signed with different teams during the opening of free agency.
