A disturbing incident has occurred on Long Island where numerous dead birds, presumed victims of bird flu, have washed ashore. Local eyewitnesses reported the scene as alarming, finding dead birds floating in the water. Experts highlight the dangers of highly pathogenic avian influenza, advising locals to be cautious and seek medical help if necessary. This incident follows the euthanization of nearly 100,000 birds at Crescent Duck Farm due to the virus, although the farm has since hatched 3,700 chicks to recover from the losses.
"They were everywhere, dead in the water, floating by the shore," eyewitness Tim Jones told Newsday of the scene near his private waterfront community, Patchogue Shores, on Tuesday. "Some were scavenged."
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation warned residents to consider the dead birds contaminated with highly pathogenic avian influenza as this incident follows numerous reported infections.
Although the risk of HPAI is low in people, anyone in contact with sick or dead birds should seek medical attention if they develop cough, sore throat, eye irritation, or body aches.
Since the last incident that forced Crescent Duck Farm to euthanize nearly 100,000 livestock, they have managed to successfully hatch 3,700 chicks in an effort to recover.
