Officials in Long Island issued a health warning following the discovery of a rabid raccoon on the Nassau-Suffolk county border, marking the fifth case this year. Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott noted increased surveillance in response to this concern, particularly in western Suffolk County. An oral rabies vaccine baiting campaign is set to begin later this year. Residents are urged to report any sick or dead raccoons. Previous targeted bait drops have occurred in areas including Massapequa and Bethpage, highlighting efforts to combat the outbreak.
We continue to conduct increased raccoon surveillance particularly in western Suffolk County as we prepare to conduct an oral rabies vaccine baiting campaign to begin later this year, health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott said.
We encourage residents to continue to remain vigilant and report sick or dead raccoons to us.
