"Anthony DiComo of MLB.com was among those to report that the Mets still have interest in re-signing Díaz. It seems Williams is on board with that plan, as DiComo writes that the new signee is open to pitching in a setup capacity if the Mets bring back their incumbent closer. Díaz rejected a qualifying offer and is reportedly seeking a deal in the five-year, $100MM range."
"The Williams signing presumably reduces the odds of a Díaz return. The Mets might feel more comfortable walking away and collecting a compensatory draft pick now that they no longer need a closer. Yet they certainly still need to add in the late innings. Tyler Rogers, Ryan Helsley, Gregory Soto and Ryne Stanek also all hit free agency. If Williams were penciled into the ninth, Huascar Brazoban would be their most established right-handed setup man. They should bring in another two high-leverage relievers at least."
The Mets signed Devin Williams to a three-year contract to strengthen the back of their bullpen. Williams is open to pitching in a setup capacity if the team re-signs Edwin Díaz. Díaz rejected a qualifying offer and is reportedly seeking a five-year, $100MM deal, placing the reunion odds near 50-50. Williams' addition reduces the urgency to re-sign a closer but does not eliminate interest in Díaz. Multiple high-leverage relievers are free agents, creating the need for at least two more late-inning additions. Díaz posted a 1.63 ERA with a 38% strikeout rate across 66 1/3 innings last season.
