Open Source Initiative closes down board candidate
Briefly

The Open Source Initiative's 2025 Board of Directors election is controversial due to the rejection of a candidate, Luke Faraone, over confusion regarding submission deadlines that involved differing time zones. Despite criticism, OSI Chairman Tracy Hinds maintained that all eligible candidates were informed of the time zone through multiple emails. The situation is compounded by ongoing dissatisfaction within the community related to OSI's recent Open Source Artificial Intelligence Definition, indicating underlying tensions regarding organizational transparency and governance practices.
The OSI's contact address is in California, so it seems arbitrary and capricious to retroactively define all of these processes as being governed by UTC.
Everyone who is qualified to run for elections... received multiple emails with the time zone, sent with read receipts.
We appreciate the opportunity to improve our processes, and we're looking forward to the next steps in the election for our community.
The election row is taking place amid community dissent over the organization's Open Source Artificial Intelligence Definition (OSAID) that debuted last October.
