Poynter welcomes inaugural class for 'Covering Child Welfare: A Journalist's Guide to Impactful Reporting' - Poynter
Briefly

The Poynter Institute, in partnership with Resolve Philly and backed by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, has launched a training program titled "Covering Child Welfare: A Journalist's Guide to Impactful Reporting". This initiative aims to empower journalists by equipping them with the tools needed to report on the critical issues of child protection and the foster care system. Over six online sessions, participants will learn how to create ethical, community-focused stories that highlight the challenges within this domain while fostering public discourse.
The critical watchdog work of journalism matters on so many levels, including to children and families. This program gives journalists the chance to build their skills to better serve some of the people who need them most.
I got an assignment to spend one year covering the foster care system in Philadelphia. It's five years later, and I'm still here because I came to realize this subject had existed in kind of a vacuum, with very little coverage beyond the periodic stories about a child's tragic death.
Attendees will gain knowledge and tools to build trust, engagement and increase readership while driving meaningful public discourse.
This initiative is designed to empower journalists to effectively report on critical issues surrounding child protection and the foster care system. Reporter and editor teams will learn how to tell compelling, community-focused stories.
