2024 Confirmed As Hottest Year on Record, Part of Sustained Upward March
Briefly

In 2024, Earth experienced its warmest average surface temperature on record, at 2.30 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th-century baseline, surpassing the previous record from 2023.
For over half of 2024, average temperatures were above 1.5 degrees Celsius from the baseline, raising concerns as this may have exceeded this critical threshold for the first time.
Gavin Schmidt stated, 'The Paris Agreement on climate change sets forth efforts to remain below 1.5 degrees Celsius over the long term,' highlighting the urgency of addressing unprecedented temperatures.
Scientists agree that the warming trend is mainly due to greenhouse gases, with carbon dioxide concentrations rising from approximately 280 parts per million pre-industrial to around 420 parts per million today.
