Briefly

The results show a striking pattern: The largest number of people by far—about 10% of the global population—live within 5 kilometers of the coast, and another 5% live between 5 and 10 kilometers.
Between 2000 and 2018, the global population living within 10 kilometers of the water increased by about 233 million inhabitants—about 28%. That's equivalent to adding 23 new cities with populations of over 10 million.
