Dr Kevin Healy noted, 'In our study we tracked changes in tweets, and Wikipedia page visits before and after the extinction of eight species...It was surprising to see such a dramatic spike in interest, but it faded quickly.'
Dr Susan Canavan stated, 'Our research indicates that while social media evokes immediate reactions for extinct species, these sentiments are fleeting when compared to the longer-lasting engagement found through Wikipedia.'
