"For any detailed information on what caused the unusual odor, please contact [Russian cosmonaut agency] Roscosmos," said NASA news chief Kelly O. Humphries, highlighting the lack of information on the situation.
Anatoly Zak stated, "the [Progress] cargo ship made contact with the docking port of the Poisk module; but after crew members opened the hatch... it had to be closed immediately due to a toxic smell and possible contamination hazard in the form of droplets," suggesting a serious concern.
The US speculated the smell originated from outgassing of Progress' cargo, while Russia attributed it to the Poisk docking mechanism, reflecting the uncertainty in the investigation.
NASA and Roscosmos are also at odds over leaks in the Russian ISS segment, which NASA claims could lead to catastrophic failure, contrasting with Russia's dismissal of concerns.
