The new study challenges the traditional belief of Iceland's formation and suggests that pieces of lost and submerged fragments from both European and North American continents are present in Iceland and Greenland Iceland Faroes Ridge (GIFR).
The researchers coined a new term, 'Rifted Oceanic Magmatic Plateau' (ROMP), to describe this new feature, comparing it to finding the 'Lost City of Atlantis' with submerged continent fragments.
By studying rifting in Africa and comparing it to Iceland's behavior, researchers suggest that European and North American continents are still in the process of breaking apart, contrary to the widely accepted belief of a separation 52 million years ago.
