Researchers at Nova Southeastern University delivered approximately 300 corals to the Texas State Aquarium as a precautionary measure to protect Florida's staghorn coral populations.
According to TAMU-CC professor Keisha Bahr, coral reefs have been declining since the 1970s due to stressors like sedimentation and rising water temperatures, with current conditions described as alarming.
Bahr highlighted the urgency of this relocation, mentioning a NOAA bleaching alert level 2 indicating widespread coral bleaching and potential mortality.
This collaborative effort aims to safeguard 71 genotypes of staghorn coral, preserving genetic diversity as Florida's environmental conditions deteriorate.
