January 2025 marked a significant milestone as global temperatures soared for the 18th out of the last 19 months, surpassing the critical 1.5C threshold set by global leaders. Europe experienced unprecedented warmth except for a few cooler areas like Ireland. Notably, this warming trend persisted even with the shift from the El Niño to La Niña climate patterns. Global averages showed temperatures 1.75C above pre-industrial levels, while alarming declines in sea ice levels were reported in both the Arctic and Antarctic regions, highlighting ongoing climate concerns despite localized cold spells.
It was the 18th month out of the last 19 when average global temperatures exceeded the threshold the world's governments have pledged to do everything possible not to breach.
January 2025 is another surprising month, continuing the record temperatures observed throughout the last two years, despite the development of La Niña conditions.
