In an exclusive extract from a new book, a professional Irish footballer shares his journey of discovering his autism diagnosis at 33, paralleling it with his daughter Willow-Ivy's experiences. The author reflects on their shared traits and the influence of autism on his life and career, as well as the nuances of recognizing and embracing such a part of their identities. He emphasizes the importance of family dynamics and the safe environment they provide for both him and Willow during their respective journeys with autism.
Autism was something that I never knew too much about, even though it had been with me forever. I was diagnosed as autistic in 2023, having had our daughter, Willow-Ivy, diagnosed previously.
When I decided to go through the diagnosis process, it was because there were so many similarities between Willow and me. I had thought about it for a long time, particularly watching Willow grow up.
Seeing her little ways, her little differences to her older siblings and recognising that her family was her 'safe space' made me reflect on my own experiences with autism.
