Researchers at Shanghai Jiao Tong University have for the first time successfully created mice from two fathers by inserting two sperm cells into an egg. Using gene editing, they managed to produce embryos that carried genetic material from both fathers, leading to the birth of two fertile male mice that mated and produced offspring. This research may offer pathways for same-sex couples to have children genetically linked to them, yet experts highlight significant ethical concerns and low success rates that must be addressed before applying these methods to humans.
'In this study, we report the generation of fertile androgenetic mice,' the Chinese experts say in their paper, published in the journal PNAS.
'This research on generating offspring from same-sex parents is promising,' Galichet, who was not involved with the experiments, told New Scientist.
