Bernard James, who transitioned from Guyana to the U.S., reflects on his life after the death of his wife, Corlette, from cancer in 2009. They were married when Bernard was just 22 and had six-year-old twins at the time of her passing. With the weight of running his plumbing company and managing a restaurant that he started during Corlette's pregnancy, he faced numerous challenges. Following her death, he uprooted his family to California hoping for a fresh start. He highlights Corlette's strong and commanding presence in both life and business.
I had plans to slowly renovate it and open a restaurant. Corlette was still running her family's company, too.
Corlette was a strong, strong woman. She lit up a room when she walked into it, but in business, she commanded respect.
