The narrative begins with a personal recollection of moving to New Orleans, inspired by childhood memories of the city. After settling in, the sight of feral cats behind the apartment complex sparks concern. A chance encounter with Nita Hemeter, co-founder of Trap Dat Cat, leads to an effort to help these strays through trap-neuter-return initiatives. The protagonist takes action to feed and eventually attempt to trap a particularly scraggly cat in need of assistance.
I began to notice the cats. About a dozen lingered, lazy yet alert, behind my apartment complex. Whenever someone approached, they scattered and hid beneath the building.
My father pushed barges up and down the Mississippi River, and sometimes he let me tag along. The city seemed so luminous at night-so different from tiny Convent, Louisiana.
