P'Nut the squirrel's grieving owner slams NY's months-late boilerplate apology - and still doesn't have beloved pet's remains
Briefly

New York officials issued an apology for the seizure and euthanization of P'Nut the squirrel and Fred the raccoon, admitting mistakes were made in the treatment of these pets. Amanda Lefton, a representative from the Department of Environmental Conservation, acknowledged community distress and promised improvements in wildlife protection processes. The apology, however, did not sit well with P'Nut's owner, Mark Longo, who criticized the delay and lack of information about his pet's remains. As of December, the remains of both animals are still being kept as evidence by the agency.
"We know that we can do better moving forward," Amanda Lefton stated, acknowledging the distress caused to communities throughout New York while apologizing for the treatment of P'Nut and Fred.
"It took DEC almost five months to respond, and they respond with, 'We can do better.' Five months of not knowing why Peanut was killed," said Mark Longo, expressing his disappointment with the agency.
