The XL Bully became controversial after multiple attacks, prompting seizures and dogs being put down. Strict controls were introduced to phase out the breed. Fingal, Limerick, Louth and Cork recorded the most put-downs. New legislation banned import, breeding, sale and rehoming; owners could apply for exemption certificates.
