Sander Coers' project, Eulogy, was inspired by a photograph of his grandfather's body being taken from his home, highlighting deep personal and historical themes. Despite not dying from Covid-19, the timing and public nature of the image prompted Coers to delve into family histories marked by colonialism, war, and silence. His grandfather, a product of mixed heritage, sought answers to his identity but spoke little about it. Eulogy integrates various mediums to reflect on lost narratives and the impact of generational silence, resulting in a broader commentary on personal and collective histories intertwined with colonial legacies.
Seeing that image felt surreal, almost like an intrusion into something so deeply personal. But at the same time, it became a kind of catalyst for me.
It was a starting point to explore the silences, losses, and unspoken histories that have shaped families for generations.
Caught between two cultures marked by colonialism, war, and displacement, my grandfather spent much of his life looking for clues about his origins.
What begins as a personal story quickly unfurls into something far wider: a portrait of generational silence, and the lingering shadows of colonial history.
