'Icon in the neighborhood': Century-old SF hardware store to close
Briefly

Pacific Heights Hardware, a historic store in San Francisco that opened in 1907, will close its doors by the end of the month after struggling to generate sufficient revenue. The store has seen slow business over the past few years, leading to financial losses. New owner Ammar Swalim attempted to revitalize it but was unable to stop the decline. The community expressed sadness at the closure, recalling fond memories and appreciating the store's curated inventory and staff expertise. A going-out-of-business sale is currently underway, drawing some customers back in for last purchases.
At one point, Swalim even gave away hundreds of avocados to community members after finding a massive tree bearing the fruit in the backyard.
Since we put out the going-out-of-business sale, a lot of people have come in, and they stress how sorry they were and gave hugs.
It's been an icon in the neighborhood for years, with a curated inventory and knowledgeable staff who could offer valuable advice.
We just didn't have a lot of people coming by, and so it was just costing us more money than we were getting.
