Pacific Gas & Electric intends to reactivate its Elkhorn Battery Energy Storage Facility in Monterey County by June, aiming to meet summer energy demands. This decision comes amidst objections from local officials due to safety concerns raised following a January fire at an adjacent Vistra-owned battery storage site, which sent toxic gases into the air. County Supervisor Glenn Church criticized PG&E for lacking transparency and collaboration with the community still recovering from the fire's impact, emphasizing the need for thorough investigations and stronger emergency protocols before resuming operations.
"Restarting operations before investigations are complete and before stronger emergency protocols are in place is disappointing and deeply troubling," he said.
"I had hoped that PG&E would take a more transparent and collaborative approach in addressing the concerns of our surrounding communities, which are still grappling with the fallout of the largest BESS fire in history," Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church wrote on Facebook.
