Cocky cop jailed for stealing bitcoins had log of his crypto theft in his office
Briefly

Paul Chowles, a former UK National Crime Agency officer, was sentenced to five and a half years in prison for stealing 50 bitcoins during an investigation of Silk Road. He assisted in the arrest of Thomas White, who operated Silk Road 2.0. Chowles transferred bitcoins from White's wallets to a public address, using Bitcoin Fog to obscure the theft. Initially undetected for years, the value of the bitcoins surged to nearly $6 million, and an investigation began after White alerted authorities of the theft.
In 2017, Paul Chowles transferred 50 of 97 seized bitcoins from one of Thomas White's wallets to a public address, attempting to hide his theft through the use of a cryptocurrency mixer called Bitcoin Fog.
The theft of bitcoins, which were worth about $80,000 at the time, is now valued at nearly $6 million, significantly increasing the severity of the crime.
Chowles almost went undetected for several years until Thomas White tipped off local cops, leading to an investigation into Chowles' involvement in the bitcoin theft.
