Crime in the U.S. fell in 2023, FBI data show

In 2023, violent crime in the U.S. saw an estimated drop of 3% overall, with murders declining significantly by 11.6% and rapes by 9.4%.
According to the FBI's Summary of Crime in the Nation report, property crime also fell nationally, decreasing by 2.4%, although motor vehicle theft rose sharply by 12.6%.
The decreases in crime come as a continuation of a trend following a previous surge during the coronavirus pandemic, providing a hopeful outlook for safety in communities.
This year’s FBI report is informed by data from over 315 million people and includes contributions from every U.S. city with a population exceeding 1 million.
