"My prosecutors have looked at this and they've told me, if it was a person on the other end of that screen, we would be charging them with murder."
"ChatGPT offered significant advice to the shooter before he committed such heinous crimes. We cannot have AI bots that are advising people on how to kill others."
"Last year's mass shooting at Florida State University was a tragedy, but ChatGPT is not responsible for this terrible crime."
Florida's Attorney General James Uthmeier announced a criminal investigation into OpenAI regarding its ChatGPT chatbot's involvement in a mass shooting at Florida State University. The shooting, which resulted in two deaths and six injuries, was perpetrated by student Phoenix Ikner. Prosecutors reviewed chat logs indicating Ikner sought advice from ChatGPT on weapons and timing before the attack. Uthmeier stated that if a person had provided such advice, they would face murder charges. OpenAI has been subpoenaed for its policies on user threats and reporting crimes.
