Today, looking back, it’s hard to believe that over a decade ago I stood among thousands of hopeful protesters, believing in our right to choose our leaders. We were ready to fight for democracy. But now, silence falls over Hong Kong’s streets, a stark reminder that the promise of universal suffrage has been largely forgotten as dissenters have been silenced and ruled out.
The moment teargas engulfed the crowd, I could feel the panic and fear gripping everyone around me. We had gathered peacefully to demand our voices be heard, only to be met with aggression and violence by the police. It shattered the illusion of safety we had, and from that night, I understood that silence would come to define our future.
