Microsoft Teams can soon snitch on your location using Wi-Fi connections
"When users connect to their organization's Wi-Fi, Teams will soon be able to automatically update their work location to reflect the building they're working from. This feature will be off by default. Tenant admins will decide whether to enable it and require end-users to opt-in. Though that might sound pretty tame on paper, there are some unsettling implications that could arise from this feature."
"Above all, however, this new automatic location-setting feature could be used by employers to more closely monitor their employees. Is Employee A adhering to hybrid work guidelines like "two days at home and three days in the office"? Is Employee B constantly working from home and skipping out on in-office days? Taken to the extreme, it could even be used to note when Employee C arrives on site to determine tardiness."
Microsoft Teams will gain a feature that automatically updates a user's work location when they connect to their organization's Wi‑Fi, with a global rollout planned for February 2026 on Windows and macOS. The feature will be off by default, and tenant administrators will decide whether to enable it and require end-user opt‑in. When enabled, Teams will reflect the building a user is working from and can indicate movement between Wi‑Fi access points. The feature can make impromptu physical meetings easier and eliminate anonymous office spots. The feature could also enable employers to track hybrid-work compliance, in‑office patterns, and arrival times.
