Rep. Gerald Connolly of the House Oversight Committee has raised alarms about the actions of DOGE at the Social Security Administration (SSA), claiming they have created "chaos" that jeopardizes Americans’ privacy and access to benefits. Connolly's letter to SSA officials highlights concerns over DOGE's efforts to merge sensitive data from various federal agencies into one database. He argues that DOGE's approach disregards critical cybersecurity laws and may result in unlawful data handling, including attempts by DOGE engineers to bypass security measures for unauthorized access to sensitive information.
In a Thursday letter to Michelle Anderson, the SSA's Assistant Inspector General for Audit, Democratic Representative Gerald Connolly of Virginia urged the agency to investigate DOGE's actions and access to SSA data.
Connolly said that DOGE engineers have tried to skirt network security controls to create specialized computers for themselves with full access to data across agencies, and that DOGE associates have been collecting "backpacks full of laptops" each containing access to federal agencies' databases.
