California state senator Scott Wiener initially proposed a bill for active speed assistance technology, but after intense opposition, he pivoted to passive technology, emphasizing its effectiveness.
"We're trying to impose their will on the rest of the country... It’s too fast," said Jay Beeber, reflecting the controversy over the speed assistance law's perceived overreach.
"Once we looked at the studies, we saw that the passive speed limiter is also highly effective. We listened and we heard," Wiener explained his bill's evolution.
The strong pushback showed democracy in action, with even close friends expressing concern about the bill's implications for driving autonomy and safety regulations.
