Jessica Peterson, a flight test engineer with nearly 20 years at the Air Force, voiced her concern over a DoD memo mandating the removal of DEI content from its websites, impacting her and women's accomplishments. Reflecting on her career, Peterson noted instances of being the only woman in her field but highlighted her success and growth despite that. The memo's directives not only surprise her, but raise alarms about how women's achievements might not be acknowledged, negatively affecting future opportunities for women and minorities within the military and engineering sectors.
In February, Peterson found out that many articles highlighting her accomplishments or written by her would be removed following orders in a memo from the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
As I've gotten more experience and more credentials... my confidence has grown. For most of my career, the gender divide hasn't been that big of a deal to me.
To be honest, I usually don't even notice it. It's shocking that the removal of content about me highlights how women's achievements can be considered unimportant.
History shouldn't be removed, and I am concerned about future opportunities for women and minorities in fields like mine.
