WikiPortraits is a volunteer initiative aimed at improving the quality of photographs available for celebrity profiles on Wikipedia. Many existing images are outdated or low-quality, prompting this group of amateur photographers to capture Creative Commons-licensed images at public events. Funded by the Wikimedia Foundation, these efforts are welcomed by some celebrities who prefer better representations of themselves online. Photographer Jay Dixit shared an anecdote about 'Succession' star Jeremy Strong, who expressed relief at having higher quality images available- showcasing the importance of this project.
Enter WikiPortraits, a team of amateur snappers who have been hitting up festivals, award ceremonies and other events to take Creative Commons-licensed shots of high-profile attendees.
Any media uploaded to Wikipedia has to be made freely available for anyone to use. Given that professional photographers want to make money from their work, they don't tend to share their photos there.
