ExpressVPN gets faster and more secure, thanks to Rust
Briefly

ExpressVPN has upgraded its Lightway codebase from C to Rust, which promises enhanced speed and security. The new Lightway 2.0, currently available on the Aircove router, facilitates better performance without requiring users to install a VPN on multiple devices. Testing revealed speed improvements, with connections reaching between 290 and 330 Mbps, approximately 20% faster than earlier versions. According to ExpressVPN, the shift to Rust was a strategic move to bolster performance while maintaining future adaptability and security.
Pete Membrey, ExpressVPN's chief research officer, stated: "At ExpressVPN, we innovate to solve the challenges of tomorrow. Upgrading Lightway from its previous C code to Rust was a strategic and straightforward decision to enhance performance and security while ensuring longevity."
In my tests, I connected to my updated router using a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet-connected Linux Mint desktop and a Samsung Galaxy 25 Plus, achieving VPN speeds of 290 to 330 Mbps.
