FBI takes down botnet exploiting aging routers
Briefly

The FBI and Dutch police have successfully taken down two botnets targeting older wireless internet routers worldwide, indicting four individuals linked to the operation. The botnets used malware to reconfigure these routers, enabling their use as proxy servers on websites like Anyproxy.net and 5socks.net. The criminals allegedly earned over $46 million from these activities. More than half of the botnet's victims are in the US, with ongoing threats to internet security as malicious actors utilize proxy services to evade detection. The operation, known as Operation Moonlander, highlights significant cybersecurity concerns.
The defendants are believed to have amassed more than $46 million from selling access to the infected routers that were part of the Anyproxy botnet.
Proxy services have and will continue to present a direct threat to internet security as they allow malicious actors to hide behind unsuspecting residential IPs, complicating detection by network monitoring tools.
