Perplexity teases a web browser called Comet | TechCrunch
Briefly

Perplexity, known for its AI-powered search engine, recently announced plans to develop a new web browser named Comet, although its design and release date remain unclear. The browser aims to innovate beyond existing options like Chrome, amidst growing competition from other AI-enhanced browsers. Perplexity, founded in 2022, has achieved significant traction with over 100 million weekly searches and substantial venture capital funding. However, it faces ongoing legal challenges from publishers concerned about content replication, posing potential hurdles as it seeks to expand its product portfolio.
"Just like Perplexity reinvented search, we're also reinventing the browser," a Perplexity spokesperson told TechCrunch via email. "Stay tuned for updates."
Perplexity's browser will join a very crowded field, putting it mildly. Aside from incumbents like Chrome, there's countless third-party alternative browsers out there.
Perplexity may be betting that it can leverage its search engine user base to quickly ramp up and make some sort of a dent in the space with Comet.
A thorn in Perplexity's side, however, is its legal tussles with publishers. News Corp's Dow Jones and the NY Post have sued Perplexity over what they describe as a 'content kleptocracy.'
