$70 travel hack from SF health department could save your life
Briefly

The Adult Immunization and Travel Clinic at Civic Center, established in 1999 by the San Francisco Department of Public Health, offers comprehensive travel health advice for $70. Nurses provide personal assessments based on travel itineraries, ensuring that travelers get pertinent immunizations without unnecessary expenses. Nicole Copeland, a seasoned nurse, emphasizes the importance of expert guidance, citing instances where patients have unnecessarily paid for vaccinations that weren't needed. The clinic services approximately 150 travelers monthly, providing a critical resource for safe international travel. Vaccination costs vary, with some, like yellow fever, priced competitively against over-the-counter options.
Instead of relying on internet sources or brushing up on WebMD posts, travelers can receive personal assistance from the clinic's nurses, who can help them understand which immunizations are important to receive before visiting another country.
Nicole Copeland, a travel nurse at AITC for nearly 24 years, told SFGATE how she once had a patient who went to the pharmacy to receive a yellow fever vaccine after determining on their own that they needed it.
The $70 visit does not cover the cost of the vaccines, but Copeland said the prices are competitive with that of over-the-counter products.
They spent a couple hundred bucks on a vaccine that they really didn't need.
