First case of deadlier strain of mpox detected in Ireland after patient returns from abroad
Briefly

The Health Service Executive (HSE) confirmed the first case of Clade I mpox in Ireland, detected in a traveler returning from the Democratic Republic of Congo. While Clade I is the most severe strain, the public risk remains considered low, according to health officials. The HSE is monitoring the situation closely and has contacted close contacts of the infected person to provide guidance. The WHO previously designated the spread of mpox as a global health emergency, highlighting its serious nature, especially Clade I's higher severity compared to Clade 2.
"This is the first detected case of Clade I mpox in Ireland. It is not unexpected, as small numbers of cases have been seen in Europe and countries outside Africa."
"I would like to reassure the public that the risk to the Irish population remains low. Close contacts are being contacted by the local public health team."
