First known U.S. case of mpox variant found in San Mateo County

San Mateo County has reported the first known case of the clade I variant of mpox in the U.S., contracted by a traveler returning from Africa.

Health officials emphasize the detected variant can lead to more severe illness but currently pose a very low risk to the public in the U.S.

The individual who contracted clade I mpox is experiencing mild symptoms and is isolating at home, indicating controlled management of the situation.

While clade II mpox has caused significant illness globally, clade I's presence is newly marked and not spreading within San Mateo County.
