Recent cuts at the CDC and FDA saw complete layoffs of FOIA staff, disrupting the processing of requests for public information. This move by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also affected many FOIA personnel at the NIH. With most staff remaining at FDA not engaged in FOIA processing, the fate of pending requests is uncertain. The cuts aim to centralize FOIA processing across HHS, although many express concern over how this will impact public access to vital government records.
For most types of FOIA requests there is no staff," the FDA official said.
The goal of the cuts is to create a central place to handle FOIA requests for the entire department.
