The US Department of Health and Human Services has experienced mass layoffs, cutting approximately 10,000 jobs as part of a federal workforce reduction drive led by the Trump administration. Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr acknowledged that about 20% of these cuts were erroneously made and would require reinstatement. Some critical programs, like those monitoring lead exposure in children, were mistakenly affected. The approach, described as part of a larger efficiency initiative, remains under scrutiny, particularly concerning which staff and functions will be restored moving forward.

Kennedy stated that some programs, including one monitoring lead exposure in children, were mistakenly gutted by the layoffs.
