Utilities in fire-affected areas have reported high levels of the carcinogen benzene in their water. State regulators have issued advisories urging residents not to drink or boil the water, while still permitting its use for other activities. Although this approach aims to ensure access to water, experts caution against using it due to potential health risks. In particular, long-term exposure to benzene raises concerns about serious blood cancers and anemia. Two of Altadena's three water utilities have found benzene contamination, with some samples showing levels significantly above state limits.
Lincoln Avenue Water Co. reported that of its 296 samples analyzed so far, 30 exceeded the state's maximum contamination level, with some levels at 31 times higher.
State regulators recommended 'do not drink' and 'do not boil' notices for affected residents while balancing the need for usable water despite health risks.
