Walmart has recalled specific lots of Great Value brand frozen shrimp due to potential radioactive contamination with Cesium-137. The FDA requested the recall after finding the radioactive isotope in shipping containers and shrimp samples from Indonesia. Although the contamination is considered a low health risk, officials recommend consumers dispose of the affected products. Cesium-137 is found globally as a byproduct of nuclear reactions, but the levels detected in the shrimp were much lower than FDA intervention criteria. The FDA continues to investigate the source of contamination.
Walmart has recalled frozen, raw shrimp due to potential radioactive contamination after the FDA detected Cesium-137 in shipping containers and a sample of shrimp imported from Indonesia.
The FDA identified three lots of Great Value brand frozen shrimp that could pose health concerns due to low levels of Cesium-137, asking consumers to discard these products.
While Cesium-137 is a byproduct of nuclear reactions and found broadly in the environment, the detected levels in shrimp were significantly lower than FDA intervention thresholds.
The FDA's investigation followed reports of Cesium-137 contamination in shrimp shipments processed by P.T. Bahari Makmur Sejati from Indonesia, after alerts from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
