""It's not exactly a dream vacation to come and be harassed by mosquitoes," says Hervé Bossin, director of the medical entomology laboratory at Tahiti's Institut Louis Malardé."
""You kind of flood the zone," Bossin says. "We have seen the population decrease significantly over the years as a result of our efforts.""
Mosquitoes pose serious health risks as cases of insect-borne diseases increase globally. Over 12 million dengue fever cases were reported in the Americas in early 2023, significantly higher than previous years. Malaria cases in the U.S. have also risen, with nearly 2,000 cases and 10 deaths reported in 2022. Factors contributing to this rise include warmer temperatures, wetter weather, and increased plastic pollution. Some luxury resorts are combating this issue by releasing sterilized male mosquitoes to reduce populations without pesticides.
